High School Programs

CEMS participates in several education and research programs for high school students. Projects are designed to serve select, motivated students, including students from under-represented student populations. Learn more about these programs from the CEMS Education Specialist. CEMS scientists and staff members are actively involved in education and outreach programs. Focused at teachers, students, and the community, these programs offer opportunities to explore environmental issues and to participate in “hands-on” research projects.

School or Program Projects
Brentwood High School: Green Batteries Project
CEMS will be hosting students from underrepresented and minority groups from Brentwood High School. Students will be introduced to CEMS research areas and will tour laboratories of CEMS researchers. This will be part of a semester long course. The students will enroll in EST104 through the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP). Mirza Beg will be mentoring these students along with Prof. Clare Grey and her graduate research students. They will be working on the “Green Batteries Project”. The students will learn about environmental and health impacts of metals and chemicals. The emphasis will be on making environmentally friendly batteries. Later on they will be given a tour of a battery manufacturing plant on Long Island.

Past Independent Projects
To read about what individual high school students have worked on in the past, see the Independent Projects page for details.

Other Past Projects
WISE: WISE 2003-2004 Water Analysis Project
WISE Students from Mt. Sinai, Riverhead, Port Jefferson, and Comsewogue participate in the CEMS Outreach program. Marianna A. Kissell, graduate student in the Geosciences Department will be directing the women along with Sharon Pavulaan, WISE Pre- college Coordinator and Mirza Beg, CEMS Education Specialist.
Sayville High School : On October 8, 2003, CEMS hosted the Sayville High School for a lecture and facility tour of the Center for Environmental Molecular Science Labs. Faculty members taught 23 junior high students about the Center's scientific mission, and how the research relates to the environment. Students were enrolled in the GEO 121 course and will received college credit to conduct independent research on environmental and earth science topics. Mirza Beg, CEMS Education Specialist and Glenn Richard, Educational Coordinator for the Mineral Physics Institute guided the tours along with Mr. Brian Vorwald and Mrs. Janet Kazmarak the Earth Science teachers at Sayville High School.

Teachers Training: During the Fall 2003 Semester, teacher students enrolled in CEN514 – Geology of Long Island were introduced to the environmental problems on Long Island and the research being carried out by CEMS to address those problems. The course was partially taught by Mirza Beg and Prof. Reeder was a guest lecturer.
